7 Adventure Photographers You Should Know

Written by
Joel Fuller

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by photographers with big followings on social media. To have the sense that you’ve missed the opportunity to grow your reputation and get work with your dream clients. Truth be told, these thoughts are doing you a disservice. Your talent, hard work, and personality have just as much impact, if not more, than the size of your audience. Here is proof, with 7 photographers who are dedicated to their crafts and successfully carving their own paths.

Julia Bahlsen

Why she’s on our radar: Her dedication, passion, and talent

Julia Bahlsen is a German-born photographer living in New York City. Graduating with a bachelor's degree in photography from Parsons, her work life is two-fold. She makes a living as a full-time fashion photographer, which enables her underwater photography to be made purely out of passion, with the intention of having a positive impact on marine conservation.

“Experiencing the oceans through imagery can make a change.” -- Julia Bahlsen

After losing a very dear friend in the marine biology field, Julia looked inward and questioned the reasoning and purpose of her photography. From those moments of introspection a few years ago, she decided to dedicate herself to capturing and sharing stories of our planet’s vulnerable ocean ecosystems and wildlife. She believes “experiencing the oceans through imagery can make a change” — the power of photography, film, and social media can encourage people to make better decisions with the environment in mind.

You can see through her account, @julesintheblue, she tries to purvey a story with every image she shares and bring people closer to her real experiences. She’s determined to be the person that comes to mind when you think underwater photography and someone that people dream to work with. Her dedication, passion, and talent are why she is on our radar.

Chris Hurd

Why he’s on our radar: His unique, subject-isolating style, attention to detail, and passion

Chris Hurd is a Chicago-based photographer and software engineer. His outdoor- and travel-focused work is a blend inspired by the likes of Chris Burkard and Benjamin Hardman. Most of his early work as a photographer was event oriented, for clients including the Chicago Reader and different non-profits around his city. Through word of mouth, his reputation snowballed, and in 2016 he was approached by Apple to photograph their events on a regular basis.

“I want to put out the best quality work I can, work that represents what I really see, how I feel, and give a voice to my unique perspectives.” – Chris Hurd.

He recently became a contributing member of the Prime8 Art League, a foundation dedicated to connecting members of the creative community to the private sector in Chicago. It’s Chris’s unique, subject-isolating style, attention to detail, and passion that put him on our radar.

Rut Sole

Why she’s on our radar: Her access, love, and drive to capture the rural Pyrenees

Rut (pronounced Ruth) Sole grew up in a village of Esterri d’Àneu with a population of 756 in the Catalan Pyrenees. “There are surely more cattle than people here, but it’s incredible,” she says. Growing up with no siblings, photography became her companion and impulse to explore the hills and mountains near her home. Rut has plans to start a project that shares the romanticism of her rural homeland that shaped her — a land becoming increasingly less populated.

“I think that, as a photographer, I have great power in my hands to be able to give voice to issues or groups without much support, such as the rural world and the importance of sustainability.” – Rut Sole

Her goal is to pay the inspiration and encouragement forward to future generations of photographers, helping them to push past self-doubt and insecurities.

Chris Meugniot

Why he’s on our radar: His refined style beyond his age, dedication, and growing portfolio.

Chris Meugniot is an adventure lifestyle photographer that lives in Ventura, California, where he was born and raised. His photography and style are refined far beyond his age. One glance at his work and you will see his unique, easily recognizable aesthetic. Chris fell in love with photography in high school after realizing the power an individual's effort can have on the resulting quality of work. At the time, he was shooting with an iPhone 4, and started seeing the incredible work of Chris Burkard. That’s when he knew it’s what he wanted to do with his life.

So far, a few highlights of his career have been shooting the cover for Visit Ventura's annual magazine, photographing the summer catalogue for Iron + Resin, and working with JBL and Blundstone. Moving forward, Chris wants to continue growing as a photographer and constantly ensure he manages the balance between passion and career. He’s seen that as the two blend, sometimes your passion can become less enjoyable.

As his business has grown, Chris has noticed how important human interaction is to get work and develop meaningful connections with clients. He strives to grow his business through a reputation for quality and being a compassionate people person. Chris is on our radar because of his talent, dedication, and growing portfolio.

Julien Jeanson

Why he’s on our radar: His overwhelming talent and truthful dedication to a virtuous lifestyle

Julien Jeanson is a young photographer from Quebec, Canada who recently relocated to Banff, Alberta with his partner, Virginie. Julian studied journalism and photography, but at that time, he took the courses half-seriously, leaving photography dormant while taking up 9-to-5 work. The repetitiveness of this passionless job quickly fuelled his willpower to escape that reality through a form of creativity.

That’s when Julien got his first Canon T5 camera. He started taking photos as much as he could — of everything, everywhere. After watching Under an Arctic Sky by Chris Burkard, he travelled to Iceland and has had a creative fire inside him ever since.

His first big paid job was in California with the energy drink company Guru. This first big project encouraged Julien to take a leap of faith into photography full-time. In the short term, he wishes to keep perfecting his craft, get into filmmaking, and maintain his love for the visual arts. In the long term, Julien hopes to inspire people through creative environmentalism and promoting diversity. He truly believes in the power of using your own voice to make the world a better place.

“At the end of the day, my main goal in life is to build a sustainable future for my children and their children.” says Julien.

Julien’s overwhelming talent and truthful dedication to his virtuous lifestyle is why he deserves your recognition.
